How to Have a Successful Sober October
Like Dry January, Sober October is a month-long commitment to going alcohol-free. It started in the U.K. as a way to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and is now a worldwide movement. Today millions participate in Sober October with the intention of re-evaluating their relationship with alcohol and building better habits.
If you’re looking to cut back on your alcohol consumption, the Sober October challenge could be the perfect motivator. But if you’ve never had an extended break from alcohol before, you might be wondering if you’ll actually complete the challenge. Here are some tips to make your Sober October a success.
1. Take the Challenge With Friends
Having a support system during Sober October can help you stay motivated. Ask a couple of friends and family members if they would like to go sober with you this October, and create a group chat for encouragement. You can also join a Facebook group that talks about non-alcoholic spirits to help you learn about your options and what has helped others.
2. Remind Yourself of the Benefits
When you’re out with friends and really craving a margarita, remind yourself of the benefits that come from a month of not drinking. You’re saving money, supporting weight goals, getting better sleep, and staying sharp! Most of those who participate in Dry January and Sober October report their alcohol consumption significantly decreases in the months following.
3. Plan Your Drinks In Advance
If you have a vacation or a big social event in October (hello, Halloween), you should plan what you drink in advance. Trying to figure out what to have in a situation where you usually consume a cocktail can be stressful. If you have a party at a friend’s house, you could plan to bring a non-alcoholic cocktail. You can also look at a bar’s menu online or even call to see what type of non-alcoholic drinks they can make you. You don’t have to completely avoid gatherings with alcohol, you simply need to have a game plan ready.
4. Celebrate Your Wins
Special occasions and accomplishments are usually celebrated with a drink. So how do you celebrate a week of not drinking? Treat yourself to something that will evoke self-love, like a bubble bath, massage, or a nice dinner. You can also make a fancy mocktail at home that taste like your favorite drink. Non-alcoholic spirits can give you all the flavor you love while keeping you on track for a month of no alcohol!
5. Try Something New
Planning fun activities can help keep your mind off drinking, and help you build new traditions. You will probably have more energy to try new things now that your sleep has improved and you’re never hungover. Sign up for a new gym class, start a puzzle, learn how to bake, or volunteer in the community. There are plenty of booze-free activities to fill your time in October!
